Under the direction of Eric Williams and Cory Barlog, the game's production involved key figures like Chad Cox, Jason McDonald, Josh Hobson, Rafael Grassetti, Matt Sophos, Richard Zangrande Gaubert, and Bear McCreary. It stands as the concluding chapter of the Norse era in the God of War series, with the storyline evolving from the aftermath of Kratos's confrontation with the Aesir god Baldur in the previous game.

Gameplay-wise, Ragnarök maintains the foundation laid by its predecessor but introduces enhancements. Kratos wields a magical battle axe, double-chained blades, and a versatile shield with various offensive and defensive capabilities. Notably, a magical spear joins his arsenal. Atreus and other characters aid in combat, with some story missions granting players control over Atreus, showcasing his prowess with a magical bow. The game boasts more enemy types and mini-bosses compared to its precursor.

Originally slated for a 2021 release, delays were attributed to health issues faced by Kratos actor Christopher Judge in August 2019 and the subsequent impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on development. A downloadable content pack titled Valhalla, released on December 12, 2023, serves as an epilogue to Ragnarök, presenting Kratos and companion Mímir navigating trials within Valhalla.

Ragnarök received widespread acclaim for its compelling storytelling, well-crafted characters, stunning visuals, intricate level design, captivating music by Bear McCreary, and substantial improvements in gameplay. The game achieved monumental success in sales, with 5.1 million units sold in its first week, setting a record as the fastest-selling first-party launch week in PlayStation history. By November 2023, sales exceeded 15 million units.

The accolades continued with Ragnarök earning 11 nominations at The Game Awards 2022, winning six, including Game of the Year. It secured 12 nominations at the 26th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, ultimately winning seven, including Adventure Game of the Year. The 19th British Academy Games Awards granted the game a record-breaking 15 nominations, resulting in six wins, including the prestigious EE Game of the Year Award.
